This is literally how I feel in class!!!

This is me being the weirdo I am proud to be!!!

So.. 2010 is upon us, and what a whirlwind it has been. Between getting back into school!! Yay!!!! Looking for a job, amping up to graduate, searching for internships and setting up some awesome gallery shows, directed by YOURS TRULY, I know 2010 has already commenced the start of a new me! And i have to mention I have been SUPER Blessed just within the start of this new year! So I'm not complaining. She is recharged, revamped, more organized and on her way to being a fiscal success!!! I have had a ball since I've been back in DC. My classes are great ad if feels like I've seen soo many people I hadn't seen and miss greatly. Also My living situation is cheap cheap cheap so that rocks!!! Also, my boyfriend and I are far away from each other but were gonna make it work. Him behind in LA and me in DC seems like I should be the catalyst for the end, but to tell the truth I actually feel were getting closer as friends and its helping bud our relationship in different ways. Absents really does make the heart grown fonder! But that's just me. I miss my family and am excited that I'm about to be finished with school! Actually, I'm counting down the nano-seconds left to get! thirst much??? But I just wanted to give y'all an update. I am living up to 90% of my 2010 to do list and I think I'm living up to it really well. Once a get my jewelry line up and running for real I feel like I'll be on the path to fiscal responsibility and entrepreneurship in a major way! I cant wait to feature my work on here!!1 Ne who I'm gonna sign out! have a blessed day y'all!

In just a few days 2010 will be amongst us. Regardless if your ready or not. I feel like this is going to be the start of something EPIC! I know I have never had more reason, more inspiration, more drive, more to prove. I have a feeling this year is going to be a great one. It's funny, cause when I was little (think circa 95' I was like nine) the year 2010 seemed like the distant future. Even today, I feel as though this is the cusp of the future. This is a new day and I want an improved me, never new. I'm excited for everything this year has in store AND all that its doesn't. I'm in my 23rd year of life and I've never felt so alive. God has almost sprinkled some sage and seasoning salt on my life and caused me to feel this is the year to get my life on the best track possible. One thing I recall loving to do after Christmas was mentally drafting up what I though was going to happen in the coming months.I really want to express the things I want to accomplish and would love to see the things you want to achieve this year.Well here's my top 15 things in no particular order!!!

Chloe's 2010 Goal's (for a better, happier, healthier, more rounded me!

1. Finish up the school (Yippe!!!!)
- keep my GPA up
2. Get my career in order
-art administration/ gallery sales/ art consultations/ art dealer
- expand my jewelry biz
3. Narrow down my law school search.
4. Start my financial plan ( extending my banking plan to include a few specified accounts to help better allocate funds)
5. Eat better (self explanitory)
- cook four times a week
- left over 2/3 days
- eat out (at most) once
- multi-vitamin (daily and hair vitamins)
- bring my own water bottle
6. Nurture my hair!!! (my hair is doing well but the sides could be better)
- every two month latching
7. Workout 3-4 days a week.
- stairs
- walking quotas
- biking
- best: abs; butt; arms of my life
8. Meditate
- breathing/ focus
- chi gong
9. Travel
- to anywhere; I just wanna see more places I've never been

Do you know what today is...It my (1 year) anniversary!

Ok, so I have a flood of emotion I didn't think I'd have on today, my locks one year anniversary. For starters, I am in dismay. I can't believe that I've come this far (though i knew once I locs I wouldn't stop), that my hair looks this good, that my hair is in locs...If you told 18 year old Chloe that 23 year old Chloe would have locs, I don't know if I would believe you, but with patience and pride I am upon this date that marks my one year. My boyfriend thinks I'm soo weird for having an anniversary date and knowing it's my hairs birthday... I'm sure if I grew up in a household with multiple locers, this was my second set and had a super conscious mother; who does locs in LA (she’s so good) I'd have a nonchalant attitude too. But I don't and this is a BIG DEAL. I can tell I am definitely representing and slowly converting my mom and sister. But for him (he is loced as well) this process is soo much more then just aesthetic. So, much more then just skin/ hair deep.
This journey for me, and I think consciously, or subconsciously for Black women as a whole who partake in natural and loced hair, is a huge step toward a better us. Which permeates, not only to the physical realm but also on a deeper personal level. We, have been broken down for so long with respect to your looks, well better yet, broken down JUST because of our looks. Which, unfortunately, some of our sistas have taken these ignorant heeding to heart and altered their natural beauty to assimilate to their standards But, not me, At 5' 7" and a half (lol). damn near 6' in the right heels, milk chocolate brown, regal NAPPY locs, and a look only Africa could be the architect of I know when I walk in a room your not only in awe but intimidated cause I am the hottest worst nightmare you’ve ever imagined. Confident, educated, driven! I think that's what locs do...
Locs are that sexy girl in the club mirror putting on her lip gloss, that every girl is glancing at, some who knows they are fascinated and may want some, just come up and touch, ask questions and I oblige.. But cause while it can go from normal to petting zoo I hold my own cause I know me and my locs are a beacon for the Black beauty they too can behold if they just look inside themselves for standards. My locs have also help with some superficial aspects too. I know my butt and arms, and slowly but surely, my stomach wouldn't look this great without the work outs my worry free hair affords me. And all the hiking, swimming and biking I get to do would be nothing but a distant memory if I didn't have locs. I love being free, I love me, I love the loced community, especially sistas (cause though there is much to endure there is also so much to learn and love that we know we are blessed to be ourselves.)

I 'm glad I've chosen to live in a world of my own standards and my own making.
I'm glad I wake up and go, if I want to.
I'm glad I've got an enlighten brotha on my arm that loves the way I look and got all sisters and even a little brother that look the same way.
I'm glad I see more men and women like me everyday.. Makes me think of how great the world would be if everyone had locs.
I'm glad I can curl. dye, crinkle, flip, put up and wear down my hair without the added stress of a perm... Better yet, I'm glad I don't have to fear my new growth or the rain.
I’m glad I can have butt length hair with out begging, buy borrowing if from anywhere other then my genes!
I'm glad I'm 100% me, I'm real like the club song says...IF you got real hair(check), real nails(check), you gotta job(check) go to school( check) and take care of buiness make some noise....LOL

Iight... So I'm like this close (index finger and thumb a hairs width apart lol) to finishing Fledgling By Ms. Octavia Butler y'all... and can I say the woman is just a literary genius! This is my third Octavia B. book and it practically has me twitching in my sleep and waking up in cold sweats when I'm not reading her... LOL, Her ideas are so interesting and I wish she hadn't passed to I could expect and new book to be released...Goodness, I'm so selfish... Let the women, the legend, RIP! OCTAVIA YOU ARE GREATLY MISSED!

On another subject...WORKIN' OUT, I wanted to post some inspirational and easy moves to do cause I know the holidays got everyone in a weight (and quite frankly a life)rut! I think I've gained 10lbs with all the staying in the house, cooking and "holiday feasts"! My holiday season has been terrible.. YES, I said it terrible. Ain't nothing good come out the season yet, except for it being nearly over! I personally think all the materialism is making me sick and everywhere I turn I see someone I know stuck in some drama... But I won't burden y'all with this crap. In times like these workouts are one of the only things that hold me over and help ebb the stress from taking over!!! So here's some moves I'm currently loving and are helping me get my spirits in hyperdrive: the hundred and the Russian twist and a lil June Ambrose!

As most of you know, I'm an art enthusiast and love to feature some of my favorite artist from time to time... But, I thought I'd do something a little different and also highlight one of my art historical heroes (or rather SHEROS) for instance: Ms. Thelma Golden.

Ms. Golden, a queens native, attended Smith College. Having known what she wanted to do through internships and apprenticeships during high school and college with such prestigious institutions as Metropolitan Museum of Art, she graduated in 1987 and hit the ground running. That same year she did her first show... Since then, Ms. Golden has done curatorial work with nothign but the greats: Alison Saar, Glenn Ligon, Gary Simmons, Romare Bearden, Matthew McCaslin, Suzanne McClelland, Lorna Simpson, Jacob Lawrence and Leone & MacDonald. Currently she works at the Studio Museum in Harlem and in her influence alone has "strengthened the museum's presence in the local community and the global art world." During her almost 10 year tenure in Harlem she's worked on such showings including Isaac Julien: Vagabondia (2000), Martin Puryear: The Cane Project (2000); Glenn Ligon: Stranger (2001); Freestyle (2001); Black Romantic: The Figurative Impulse in Contemporary Art (2002); harlemworld: Metropolis as Metaphor (2004); Chris Ofili: Afro Muses (2005); Frequency (2005-06, with Christine Y. Kim); Africa Comics (2006-07); and Kori Newkirk: 1997-2007 (2007-08). In addition to her work in Harlem, she is also an active guest curator, writer, lecturer, juror, and adviser. In 2008 she was a member of the advisory team of the Whitney Biennial and in 2007 acted as a juror for the Turner Prize. Golden co-curated the traveling exhibition Glenn Ligon: Some Changes in 2005 and in 2004 curated a retrospective of fashion designer Patrick Kelly at the Brooklyn Museum. Celebrated for her insightful interviews with contemporary artists, Golden is a frequent contributor to books, catalogs, and magazines and regularly speaks at institutions around the world as well as teaching at various universities. Golden serves on the Graduate Committee at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, is on the boards of Creative Time in New York and the Institute of International Visual Arts (inIVA) in London, and is a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute. In of words, Ms. Thelma Golden is the ISH!

Now as for inspiration two artist I'm totally OBSESSED with at the current time are: Hank Willis Thomas and Renee Cox!!!!

You can't help but go to a Hank Willis Thomas show ans come out thinking words like, evocative, edgy, thought provoking. All of which his works are. He utilizes popular culture icons and marketing ploys combine with race, and gender ideals, consistently with male subjects, to create these very poignant pieces on modern African American youth culture and consumerism. These piece I've chosen to highlight merely graze the surface of his capabilities and I recommend all of you check out his work ether just via Google: Hank Willis Thomas OR Hankwillishthomas.com

Renee Cox. Need I say more the woman's works are sheer genius. Contrived candids can sometimes (most times) come out feeling very, well, contrived but not with hers. Cox give the viewer a voyeuristic approach to her pieces and make you feel as though you are really looking at a real character or moment. She uses race, class and gender struggle concepts to catapult her emotions through photography and is very unabashed about using her self, naked or clothed, as a subject; which I love because she knows best the emotion she wants of the piece. The pieces are very telling to the voice of black women in America and I personally can not wait until I am the proud owner of one... Which I will be!!!!

OH! and I gotta ask... Any OCTAVIA BUTLER FANS? I know, I know, I'm late getting on but as of now she is my obsession. I've read Wild Seed and Parable of the Sower and am in the process of reading Fledgling (sooo interesting, as of now) Please holler at me and tell me your favorite book and why you love her. If you've never heard of her Google her. She's an amazing science fiction writer and a sista (who lived in both southern California and Seattle (like myself)) Check her out... at your local library! hehehe! Much love!

11 month update...OMG

So this is my 11th month..WOW, I know, I know, its already here and next month on this very day I will be unto the ONE YEAR MARK! I can not believe it!!! It's been quite an eventful 11 months full of growth, cuts and a major combine overhaul... But it all been worth it. I literally wouldn't give up even a nano-second. Even the days when my little nubbies at my temples were hardly growing and looking rather ugly AND I though about shaving it off and starting again...even then I still hung in there because I knew my hair would grow and evolve and mature. All of which it has done and is doing and it makes me sooo happy at what I've got. I love love love my hair and can't wait for more years...Thank god for begin a black women, ya digg! So why were the 90's EMPIRICALLY the best time to be raised as a Black child??? You ask. What about us 60's kids who go a first hand look at Black revolution, who forever changed the way we conceptualized our hair and had the sexy mod clothes and the music. What about the 70's kids who got to live during the age of DISCO DIVAs, blaxpolation and a bevy of media firsts that have helped black even unto today push the envelops for first. Or what about the children of the 80's with funky asymmetrical cuts, rap, spandex culture that is still coveted even in today's world. They had the first rich black family in the form of the Cosby's, Tootie of the facts of life and got to experience the first Black man's bid for president in the form of Mr. Jesse Jackson? Or the new millennium we have a black man as president... Really do I need to say anymore? What you say, could be SO Special in the nineties that hadn't already been covered. Hair Inspiration anyone???

This is indubitably my hair inspiration!!! But IDK if thewse are even locks.. I think they are perfect sisterlocks! She's lovely and I adore her look and her stomachs poppin'... For those who don't know I'm on a quest to make my body one I absolutely adore. I like my body now, but I have a few thing I would tone up a bit.. ya know. I know I'm not obese or fat.. hardly chubby but I just know that I want to get my body right and tight now in my youth so when I get to having my children I don't have too much work to do. Plus, this should be when I look my best so why not!!! I've been doing youtube pilates and its working I haven't lost any weight (which is good) but I'm toning.. Ill give y'all the full report on my inches and what not in an official post but I just wanted to show y'all this pix! Happy locking/ nappy brothers and sisters!

Please Ignore the little horn I have in the front... It was ripped out and look absolutely atrocious! But, having just started my locks and knows how weak my edges were something to this extent was expected but all the at risk locks are doing well, growing thriving and better then ever!

Hey Hey Ladies and Gents!!!
Can I just first start off my saying thank you Lord for Trey Songs parents! (Huh??? You say!) Well for those of you who have not heard Trey Songz Ready CD, you are seriously missing a vocal treat. The new millennium has really been devoid of a lot of powerful male R & B vocals. Now, some of the songs are a little inappropriate but the boy's voice is so spine tingling good at I look past my usual stipulations!!!! I definitely recommend checking it out on Youtube... My mom is even a Trey fan...She thinks he take her back to her day and R Kelly pre-scandal(s)...

Now for the Art....

So I've had a bit of an hiatus...mainly due to getting back into the full swing of the school year has taking a slight toll. So is not having a lap (but that's another subject ennn-tirely.) But, I'm back and wanted to feature 3 artist I'm currently loving!

This is a throwback but Margaret Burroughs. I've always had a love for woodcuts and scratch board, the striking contrast is so beautiful and poignantly illustrates pieces, especially hers which speak Black female perspective which at times deals heavily with contrast. I love her work. Makes me wanna do some scratch board work...

Last semester I did one of my favorite papers of my collegiate career on Voodoo, Santeria and Obeah culture and the art of the practices. Very interesting quilts and such interesting perplexing concepts. I think she has such and interesting aesthetic.. of course Check her out!!!

So...I'm totally threw with the artificial life. What!?!? She's already natural so what could her loony self be talking about?!?! I'm talking about the nails and body portion of my temple. I'm done getting my nails done, I'm weening myself off of the crap I put in my body, I'm relegating my hair regimen consist of about four products at most and no more perfumes, commercial body washes and products and revamping my life.
For those that don't know, which should be all of you, I've been dealing with a lot of change and I feel that should also include the way I'm living my life. Now, I'm a pretty health conscious person but after reading my girl Rawshida's (http://rawrenewedrashida.blogspot.com/ ) blog (which is such an excellent source of information on truly healthy lifestyles, and I really wanted to redefine how I eat and how these food affect my mind, body and soul. I'm blessed to have raw foodies in my corner, my boyfriend's whole family sans him are raw foodies, and they really help my decsion. TB's mom hasn't eaten meat in some 30+ years. She looks great, you can tell her body is in tip top shape and she is so energetic and is simply stunning. One of those types of women that you cant real tell how old she is because she looks great. I wanna be like that and that means I have to have a level of discipline that I've yet to master. I really think this change is for the best because I can't live my life in excess forever. One day I will raise a child and I want them to want for nothing but have values that mean they are wasteful brats. Ya dig. IDK I just feel that its time for me to do some pairing down for the sake of my wallet and my general life. I hope you all can follow me cause i will keep all the progress on this blog... Now see I don't want to completely lose like a person but I would like to lose some of my belly fat! Possibly gain some ab-age...You know. I feel I'm not asking too much if I have discipline. Now, I already LOVE the gym but I'm not exactly partial to ab work but I feel at 23 I should be in the best shape of my life and I want to know one: when I have kids it wont be torture because those core muscles are tight and will remain that way well after children. But, I also want to lose this belly fat because it is something I've always struggled with. I remember being a kid with a wish list that include a great stomach! I feel I'll never be "perfect" but ain't nothing wrong with getting close. It doesn't hurt I'll look great on the beach...One of my favorite places. So follow me while I get rid of my life of excess. My locks are really coming along

Sometimes I am still; amazed at the progress of my hair. I mean, I knew this all was going to happen, that's what he 2 years of research were for; but nonetheless I am still in awe of black hair. The resilience and transformations out hair can make is really something. I remember being burned out with bald spots and tortured with alcohol induced "cleanses" from relaxers at the tender age of 10 and never thought at 23 I would have the makings of long healthy natural hair and better yet locs. It's very cool to see and I love the process. I say this all the time but I just love to reiterate it: I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO RELAXERS! Hallelujah!

Now to the reason for this post! I was reading an article on Michelle Obama, My love! If you've read post from my archive you know I've highlighted her name a few times! I just adore her. From her style to her "swagger" to sophistication and smarts the women is one point and is a beacon from Hope everywhere! She was the subject of a recent article that I loved. And to top that, she is going to be starring in a comic about raw and organic foods comic! How cool..Especially to an aspiring raw diva. But (back on topic), that got me thinking... I'm so glad the third little lady (Naturi Naughton formerly of the RnB pop group 3LW) made a comeback...And isn't being pigeon-holed into begin a tween movie queen like her trifling ex-band mate...Who kicked her out because 1. she wasn't fitting in(???) and two she wouldn't sleep with some producer (uber ewwww). Overall, it turned out for the best cause shes back and better then ever getting roles in Notorious and the remake of FAME (one of my favorite 80's movies...so IDK how I feel about that)but from the buss it may be great! So I'm glad to see that the world can see what a lovely young lady Ms. Castor is...but for what. So the western world can see her and think she's pretty. So men can see her and lust, so she can get endorsements because she sooo pretty to be an athlete. It's really some bull shit! It really goes to show how these things end up doing down. Of course the western world...AKA whites are intimidated by her athletic prowess and have to tear her down to prove a point. And it speaks volumes on women's atheltics. Do you really think it would be sooo easy to go all the way to the international level of sports without someone else doubting her. I think its offensive and disgusting to think that they had to test her gender. Just cause she doesn't have blue eyes, long blond hair and a curvaceous body shes not a lady, furthermore a women. Our standards of beauty and femininity really need to be checked. Now don't get it twisted...She IS NOT the most feminine chick I've ever seen but I know plenty of girls with her body shape and if it weren't for some hair they'd look just like her. I cant imagine the humiliation her parents, friends and most importantly she felt when they asked for such and more so when it was performed. So she's not thick as Serena, stunning like Gabrielle Union or overtly feminine like Tyra Banks but damn. She's a lady! Get over it! Haters! This goes to a long line for western culture trying to slight our people in and offed attempted to assert their concept of Beauty was the only one.I dont know about you but these are the same people who said a women that looked like me was not pretty. Would never be the first wife and titled my hair DREADlocks...Don't be fooled!

And in other gripes...WTF is up with the ignorance and violence of 2009...I may be post-segregationist America but I feel like were still in race wars. Alot of times against our damn selves. Shame!. WHAT'S "IN" TO ME RIGHT NOW

So I'm completely enamored with red lipstick... Better yet, Paprika lips. I love that redish, orangish thing that's popping up. Even my boyfriend likes it, and let's just put it like this...The man absolutely hates when I wear lipsticks cause he doesn't want to be wearing it too...lol. I'm using MAC's brick lip liner and Russian red lipstick. Now, I know what your thinking...That's not orangish red. but against my skin color its got this stunning orangish red color. I'm loving it! I'll feature some pictures for y'all! Some nay-sayers beg to differ saying red is strictly for the whites only. Now, that's where their wrong. Sistas can do anything a white girl can do but we've got to be mindful of the intensity in our colours. And if your not worried about that like me; Rock it! Chances are you'll be pleasantly surprised! I made a movie so It could be view a lil better!!!

Purple lips is also something I want to try bad. I have a feeling I'll love it and have it become a staple. Because It won't contrast against my skin the same as these white girls I think it'll be a nice shade. But I'll have to try and show you all the finished result.

Another thing I'm just loving right now is gray hair. I have notice a few here and there amongst my locks. But I have realized that I'm not going to suppress them. I'm going to rock them like a true gray haired diva would. I've always have a secret affinity for gray hair. Something about that shade on natural black women pops and really give off a sophisticated sex appeal that only someone who has truly lived can confidently sport. We'll see how they progress in later years! Renee Davis is one women how has shown the world how stunning Gray can be. Ms. Olivia Shaw is another gray haired beauty and a sisterlocker. I adore her hair and hopefully this will be me one of these days! And, of course, Ms. Nancy Wilson...no words are needed. She's my idol!!!

Now as for clothing, and I'm loving the silhouettes and styles right now. My style is a lil' Michelle Obama meets Dita Von Teese meets Erykah Badu... For a style I call afro-ecentric-chic. Things I'm currently feeling: I must say I have a little bit of a wish list of what I'm loving right now!! Dresses Skirts and flats are very hip to me!!

Another artiste I'm feeling is Brianna McCarthy... Her work is so beautiful and makes me think of words like, pretty, whimsical, dainty, melancholy, modern, lady like, and demure. She works a lot within the African American female aesthetic and definitely plus and she has this very characteristic look of her pieces. another signature element is the hair. Her pieces with flows tresses of all textures and type look to stay consistently natural and make it and absolute joy to view her work. Her pieces are wonderful iconography of modern black women and as a black woman who will one day have a Black daughter, works like this are the type of thing I want to have her look at and feel confident about herself. And speaking on the subject of hair... I've got slight updates on my own!!! I just finished a retighten a few days ago and boy can I say It was not a moment too soon. I had a bout and inch and a half new growth and it felt like forever to finish... but having brought some locks together doesn't hurt. It defiantly helps the progression of the project. I love my locks and I now this is weird but I literally feel bad for those who don't have locks in their life. I think its the mixture of self-loathing that comes with altering ones hair and the simplicity of my mornings while doing my hair. I just love locks so much I think their beautiful but i guess I'd rather everyone didn't have them cause then they'd become some sort of fad like the Afro. OH NO SHE Didn't...its true it might just... Newho I'm gonna leave y'all with this wonderful vid I made. Mind you I only highlighted a section of my hair after I thought to show my hair stylings. I love my hair and am blessed to have been enlightened eough to make the descon to switch it up!

Wow! so I'm totally in awe of the fact that the video I posted yesterday is gone. Had any of you gotten the opportunity to watch it, you would have seen that the whole video spoke on the eugenics.... A systematic use of Darwinism in the way of unnatural selection... Or better put its using the concept of survival of the fittest and killing off certain races to help maintain your own. Well... I don't want to reveal the whole movie in the offed chance you will get to see it but it's mind blowing to think how powerful the video must have been to get snatched up. I personalu felt moved and the message I will make sure any woman I know that is faced with such a descion will take it upon herself to think twice at the proliferation aspect. Though, I am a pro choicer Black life is much to needed and valuable to not really take a good long think of the things your doing... Because I'm tired of earign that abortion is the number 1 cause of death in teh Black community! Hello beautiful black people!

I wanted to ask a question and see what you my followers had to say about it.

What kind of man do you attract? Has it changed? Is it the same? Are you married single divorced? How haw your hair journey affected your love life, if at all....

I know me personally I can't speak as well on behalf of this because I went natural at age 13. However, I can say that during my press days I wasn't so much less confident but certainly more cautious of what i did and the limitation on my life led me to have issue with men. As, a cheerleader it was hard for me and my then boyfriend to have intimate encounters (non sexual of course, I was a virgin) but Even simple caressing lead to fear of head touching. the ultimate no no. One particular incident that will forever stick in my mind is one night at a club. It was my freshman year of college and I was back for the summer hanging with my girls in an ultra packed club. I had just gotten my hair pressed earlier that weeks so I knew I was poppin. I was just dancing and chatting and minding my own business when my crush at the time, Calvin H.(Mr. resident everything at Howard; good looking super intelligent, funny and available!!!)who was also from California, walked in. I ran to the bathroom to Gussie my self up only to look in the mirror grief stricken at the unsightly mess upon my head. I was so upset I started hyperventilating and crying.... Yes, crying in the club bathroom on the floor. I stormed out the club as Calvin tried to get my attention. Oh the horror. To add insult to injury, later that night I went to the car, got my flat iron out and began pressing my hair in the ihop bathroom. Not only was it awkward, but the smell was horrendous. After Thai My hair began to break and I started looking for an alternative ASAP! It began with a weave and then liberating myself. It's funny, I stopped crushing on him the next year and he got a girlfriend. A beautiful, chocolate girl, with a TWA!!!!! Yes, had I not been so ignorant I may have learned that he like women the way they are!!! But You live and you learn.

But back onto the men that I attract due to my natural hair. I must say that I've never had an issue since those high school days with a man and my hair... I actually see my permie friends have more issues. Now IDK if its cause I live in DC, IDK if its cause I'm more confident, IDK if its cause I'm in better physical shape but I do know that I'm happily in a relationship with the literal man of my dreams...Who is natural himself, ha a natural family and wants one went we get married. SO, for me natural is a way of life!!!

OK y'all so I'm officially about to explode because of this post I saw on The Young Black and Fabulous blog (YBF aka theybf.com)today... As some of my subscribers know I'm a barbie girl living in an adult world that shuns my barbie addiction. But, the editor-in-chief at Vogue magazine must be feeling my pain because he, Frank Sozzani, just announced that they will be featuring Black Barbies in next months issue. Swelling, swelling, swelling, swelling KABOOM!!!!!!! Excuse me y'all my head just exploded! This is a great feature for the magazine; a magazine of which has been call out for their lack of African American female aesthetic. I'm really happy to see Barbie featured because my grandmother Georgia Von Noble was the model for the original Black Barbies...Some history on the Black doll:

Ok so I had a major gripe today when I went to go look for my typical lock gel. Organic root stimulator, which by the way I recommend all the twisters or even if your like me a twist in the fronters, to use. I contains a good amount of natural products and it doesn't have a mineral oil. Thus, I love this stuff. However, something that bothered me was that I went to 3 different CVS and a Sally's all located in the valley... The San Fernando Valley outside of LA to be exact, and I couldn't find my stuff. Like gag me with a spoon!!! Matter of fact now that I think about it there were no natural products on display which pisses me off thoroughly!!! What that tell me is were not their target demographic...Understandable but in the same way I went there looking for product I'm sure other women do to. One thing that bothers me about the valley in general is when I see all the sisters with weave bonded to their hair... but now I realize even if these sistas wanted to be natural they do not necessarily have the option to get the products they may need. I was especially angry going to Sally's and not finding it. I ended up going to a place in the more urban aggregated area and finding something comparable but still not MY LOCK GEL!!!! Urrggg that makes me mad!

* 1 1/2 cups flour + 1 tbsp
* 1 1/4 tsp ground ginger
* 1 tsp cinnamon
* 1/4 tsp ground cloves
* 1/4 tsp nutmeg
* 1 tbsp cocoa powder
* 1/2 cup margarine
* 1/2 cup brown sugar
* 1/4 cup molasses
* 1 tsp baking soda dissolved in 1 1/2 tsp boiling water
* 1/4 cup sugar

Preparation:

Whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and cocoa in a small bowl and set aside.
Beat together the margarine and brown sugar. Add the molasses and mix well. Add half of the flour mixture and the baking soda mixture and combine well. Add the rest of the flour mixture.
Chill, covered for at least one hour. Pre-heat the oven to 325 degrees.
Spoon dough into 1 1/2 inch balls, then roll each ball in the sugar.
Bake 13-15 minutes, until surfaces start to crack slightly.

Hey y'all I know it's bee a minute but I have been working on a number of projects that have me super fill but I know I should prioritize more time for this cause I really am trying to be on Brunsli status! lol NE who I want to start out by giving my belated shout- out to MJ... The greatest that has and will ever be. Especially with the caliber of artist that is acceptable to be famous in this day and age. There just cannot ever be another man who will make and break the boundaries like his did and for that I know I'm grateful! I always felt a special tingle of lover for him because my birthday in the 30th of august and his is the 29th of august.... So a feel due to a similar cosmic swaggers I understand the huge public persona he depicts but realistically he was more reserved a shy being... Such a VIRGO trait! And I want to end my MJ spiel on this note.

Everyone stop watching and consuming MJ entertainment crap. One because all he ever wanted was to be left alone and two because they are taking two black male figures and defiling their legacy. I don't think Dr. Murray is a murderer just a caregiver that mad a mistake. Look at your Dr's record they all do. His is just more high-profile....Anywho I digress

AS FOR MY HAIR

My hair is coming along rather nicely if I do say so my self. and obviously I do! lol But I've made a number of different changes...Three C's to be exact: cut, combine and considering color! Well that's four but whateves! I wanted to give my hair a more even styled look so I decided to take the p,lunge and snip the ends. I'm sooo pleased with the results. Overall its helped give my hair a much need boost. I looks more like a style and I get complimented all the time. It looks like a blunt bob as I cut my ends. BTW I've had zero unraveling even on the ones I combine... So, don't let people lie to you...But my hair is also super nappy, so???

But as for my combining I love it! It's a lot better on my hair doing time and its helped a lot of at risk locks. I read NUBIANLOCKEDPRINCESS say there are some pluses and minuses to small locks... as I am learning. I'm ashamed to say in my Seven Month journey (woop woop) I've lost about 6 locks.... (shudder!!!!). But I ain't too mad at it cause my hair is growing like weeds and I've already restarted the ones that have been lost. I low key want a cool shaved look but I think I'm doing the most.

But, almost, to re-place my scissor happiness I want to color my hair. Something crazy like a few locks in green, blue or pink? But who knows I'll keep y'all posted on my ideas

COMIC CON 2009

So my hunny and I decided to hit up the comic convention in San Diego this year... Mind you with no ticket, little money, three hour drive (with comic con traffic) and absolutely nowhere to stay. And the verdict: I WILL BE GOING AGAIN!!! It was super cool to see all the different comics and collectors and fans. My boyfriend is an artist and has some graphic novels in the works (defiantly keep y'all posted on that) so of course we had to make the obligatory trek to SD. We had a great time and he has some cool connections with some other brothas that had stands so they hooked up up with badges we had a ball! I'm a fine art lover but I defiantly got a feel for the popular art genre and what it initials. I even went to Chuck Jones' ( bugs bunny creator) gallery and got the card to the Director of the space! So exciting! Two things I had a gripe about was the lack of the Black female aesthetic... I know ladies are probably a rare niche but the Black female comic niche isn't humongous. But it still exists. Now I'm not saying some people aren't doing their part but there defiantly need to be much more black female comic books and cartoons! Storms holding us down but she can't do all the work. Hence, why me and him are going to collaborate on a story. Would y'all buy it? Would you have your daughters, grand-daughters, nieces, cousins, friends, etc.. buy it? Just asking... Oh and my second gripe was that we didn't bring the kids. He has a ten year old brother and the most beautiful 13 year old sister and I have a ten year old brother too...Sooo they woulda had a great time.. Oh well you live and you learn. Well I live y'all with some imagery of the first Black female cartoonist work, Ms. Jackie Ormes (google her baby). Their great and inspiring for my possibly comic.

Exercise: Water gun fight with kids ( yours, the neighborhoods, niece/ nephews, etc....) for 35 minutes
I know we're all worried about our hair ( I'm not, its nappy now and it will be after the water fight) but with a scarf and shower cap this can be avoided...or go au natturale... Just a thought
You can loose upwards of 350 calories

Recipes!

This is not your mama's asparagus recipes...well actually it is. My mom makes a mean Asparagus anything though... but whatever!!!

1 lb asparagus
1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (or 1/4 teaspoon regular table salt)

Directions

Preheat oven to 425°F.
Cut off the woody bottom part of the asparagus spears and discard.
With a vegetable peeler, peel off the skin on the bottom 2-3 inches of the spears (this keeps the asparagus from being all "stringy" and if you eat asparagus you know what I mean by that).
Place asparagus on foil-lined baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil.
Sprinkle with salt.
With your hands, roll the asparagus around until they are evenly coated with oil and salt.
Roast for 10-15 minutes, depending on the thickness of your stalks and how tender you like them.
They should be tender when pierced with the tip of a knife.
The tips of the spears will get very brown but watch them to prevent burning.
They are great plain, but sometimes I serve them with a light vinaigrette if we need something acidic to balance out our meal.

Hey y'all I just came back from a bike ride and am watching the US open. I absolutely love golf, ever since Tiger stepped on the scene. I remember back in the Seattle days when it cost $ 10 for a 2 month golf camp. Due to some Microsoft big wig's donation to the course and my moms keen eye in the penny saver, me, my brother and sister all got to learn. Everyone in the neighborhood got in on the act....and a lot of new siblings also cropped up, interestingly. I got the opportunity to learn the game, hit balls at the driving range and play on a course....For 10 whole dollars!!! This is where my love for the game what manifest. Sports have come and gone with me: track, soft ball, cheerleading, volleyball, gymnastics, dance the works...but my love for golf have maintained. Since then I've become something like an addict, when I get some free time I love to stop at local course and hit a few balls at the driving range. Its a great way to be in nature breathing fresh air, learn a new activity, relax and (for you professionistas) maybe get in good with the big boss or some hard to win over clients...Needless to say, golf is no longer your white friends fathers game! lol (j/k my dad and grandfathers all play) but I am starting to notice and unnerving trend. As I see more Black boys out heading to the driving range I notice a void of little Black girls in the game. While it isn't necessarily the first sport that comes to a sistas mind when signing up for summer programs; it is a good one. Its a game that helps girls connect with nature by exposing them to pure fresh air, its great exercise with all the walking, and its a great way to find an activity that will stick with her for the rest of her life as it is not too physical, yet helps gain strategy and self esteem. But, that's not the only thing that got me to write this post.....

As I was watching the open, I was channel surfing through the commercials and caught a snippet of some programing talking about the health of Black women... A sore subject as we always land in the top of bad health and nutrition. Now, being the Black supremacist (lol) that I am, it hurts me to hear that Black women are in the bottom ranks. Especially considering I would call myself an average Black woman, and I'm concerned for my health and nutrition, stays relatively active, etc. So why do they say such things? Because statistically I am an outlier. A lot of us are. Unfortunately I am not in the majority and as we all know from looking at our friends and family, co- workers and peers (and Americans in general of any race) we do have to work on our health!! Being black I have a vested interest in us thus, I want Black women as a whole to succeed, and that means taking the necessary steps to ensure ourselves and those around us are live healthy lives. So I, Chloe Bee, am asking you all to help build a better Black community by saving ourselves Black women, a huge ( if not the most important) pillar of our community and the only one that is going to help us, and our families actively change the way our community is run! I'm going to give quick easy recipes and a few exercise ideas every post...Not all of them will be in the gym just cause we all know its annoying! So bear with me sisters to see a change in our world...The way the Obama's would like to see it!

Anyhow thank you to all my subscribers, I am now at 11 followers! I know for all the ladies breaking a hundred they're all laughing a my measly number but we gotta start somewhere and I am grateful for my followers. Thank you for your comments and support. It's only due to you all that have helped make this the best and most easy transition of my life.
I started my natural journey as a young girl in the 7th grade. The perm had eaten up my hair and I needed a swift change. Growing up in the suburbs of Seattle, Washington (Bellevue to be exact) I was one of only very(very very very, did I mention VERY) few Black students, and transitioning from my perm in those days and at that age was VERY UNHEARD OF!! I think there was one mixed girl in the class so she knew nothing, not only that she laughed at my hair. However, determined to have healthy hair I started the very unhealthy process of the press. Now, if any of you know a thing or two about Seattle you know that is about the dumbest thing you can do. The constant rain had me hiding to maintain my beautiful press and while my hair was finally growing back from the breakage, shrinkage became my worst enemy. Mind you a few years later we moved to LA and I got to have a great press my moisture due to Cheerleading had me half stepping (literally) It wasn't until the day I took my weave out Sophomore year of college at Howard (the mecca for the Natural due...in Chocolate city Washington DC) that I truly appreciated my natural hair, minus the stress of the hot comb and what not. Ever since that day I've been in a salon (if I'm lucky 4 times) and I have not looked back since. The freedom of my natural hair has only since been enhanced with my Bradelocks/ Braidlocks/ Braidlocs (whatever)! I'm getting back in the best shape of my short life and I am proud of debuting my hair anywhere!!!
It was the best decision I've made...All I do it wet my hair with some water (if needed), and spritz some oils I've mixed together (carrot oil, teatree, evoo and sweet almond) and when I wash I use a baby shampoo ( you knew the ones that SWEAR they'll never burn...(lies and Blasphemy)). Once a month I wash with Apple cider vinegar! I'll probably never use product in the same capacity again and that makes me so happy! i love to get compliments and people always ask if my sisterlocked...which I love, because they I have the opportunity to educate people on Braidlocks. One other thing that I love about my braidlocks is the men factor... (Gasp) All the guys I date are into natural hair and I have never encountered guys with hair hang-ups... But I will say when ever I take a nap or lean on a wall or anything of the sort I get the dreaded flat-afro. Most men hate that. Though its easy to fix its awkward and unsightly and being able to wake up with a similar if not same hair style is nice...Though I wrap most every night. I love her! I wish she was around while I was growing up! GEESH! Luckily, I came from a household where my dad was quick to throwaway the white dolls I got from my predominantly White peers as presents. I know, its extreme but he'd buy a new one in its place. I had maybe at best one white doll and I seldom played with it. We eventually tried to make it into a white Ken doll for our friend. Unsuccessfully, of course. We need a petition for Black parents and peers alike to buy Black dolls for our children. Regardless how foolish it seems, it affects our psyche.

Hey y'all,

I've been up to some different things concerning my hair. First off, I've combine!!!! I must say after a few months of apprehension I decided to do it. Though I'm still rather small, I just fattened up the edges to gave more support. I have fine hair and I don't want to:
1. have back, or waist length hair and it break off all the time. Which felt like my fate and
2. I was tired of marathon hair sessions in which I would give up days at a time...
I love small locks but not for me. Not to mention I met my boyfriend's sister an her locks were soooo cute. They were a little bigger then mine but her maintenance seemed effort less. Loves it. I mean, I fully understand locks are a commitment but who said a full on second job, ya know? I like the decision though my family may disagree. But they disagree with the locks to start.
Thanks to all the lock vids that helped me understand the process their is a few ladies, nubianlockedprincess and chescaleigh ( youtubers... I'm Chloe3086, since you all asked. LOL) they both highlighted the process perfect for me. So thank you!!!!

Well I'm also officially at my half year mark...Yes, that fast!!! It fells like yesterday I had my thin little set now I'm budding and beaming at the look!!!! Its getting longer bigger and me more confident in the look. I had faith and loved it from the start, but it defiantly takes a ta-da moment to realize the change and appreciate the time spent! I think it's sad when our Commander and Chief has to tell you to wash your hands! In president Obama's press conference this week he reiterated that importance of hand washing in these "unsafe health time". I'm I the only one wondering what's good in our society. Between the Bird flu the swine flu, and new mass shooting every week and my butt can find a new job...I just feel like there isn't anything to smile about. Potential bio-terrorism is what they are calling this new threat..I mean what is going on that can have us smile. I think one good thing is that they are thinking that the recession may have run it's course...I heard on the TV that the recession is over... Humph, now it could just be but with all the "it'll be worse before its betters" have me thinking otherwise. You know when things look to be increasing but the average citizen still can keep up with their bills it's actually call a DEPRESSION! So let's not put the cart before the horse....IDK all I know is that it's a good time to be a Black woman... With Michelle Obama, Beyonce kicking that lil' home-wreckers butt and a bw/wm interracial relationship in Star Trek That's hopeful for the us ladies at least!!!

Hey all!!!

I know I'm checking back in and it's been a long time....So much for my Brunsli move, ay! But I've been dealing with dreaded finals so I have some type of excuse. I'm sitting here while my booski is playing one of those video games...you know, one of those killing types. Its got all the most, savory concepts. Vulgar language, guns and blood spewing at every turn and giant worms. Oh goody... Times like this really make me realize just how much I despise these types of activity's.Why is killing via digital graphics a form of entertainment....But I digress...

How is everyone.

I'm well and my hair...The true reason for the blog, is doing very well. I'm really starting to love my hair. I've got shrinkage, a little bunching, a few awkward sized locks and all but I still can help but love them. I'm definitely OVER due for a re-tightening...But that's another story entirely. Due to all my other obligations I've really neglected a through haircare day! That will be soon trust and believe cause I've got to have about an inch of new growth! Love's it!!! Even though my hair is like honey I shrunk my massive fro'. Lol Conversely, a lot of people have commented on its growth and thickening...Me on the other hand would like to see a combo of both but whatev. They don't know what I've researched it to be and what it was to start....Wooo I still get shocked. I'm definitely all up in my hurre. I can't help it. It's so frickin cute and has little blondish peach fuzz...Which i used to despise; now with my locks its kinda cute! I'm just growing so much. Like nowadays I'm no longer pressed to make sure my hair is styled and some days i look a little "boyish" with my short fuzzy do', but my boyfriend has been supportive. He even told me the other day as we went out that I looked goregous and wearing my straight clean locks was how he like to see me best. Not all the bells and whistles. I think I still need more convincing but hey, I am a DIVA what can I say.

As for my art obsession I got a chance to go to this thing...Only the quintessential Black art community event THE Porter Colloquium! It's an event held by Howard Every year, speaks on the art progressions and challenges, debuts new and old greats of the field and highlights the accomplishments of an artist in the field. This year Ms. Emma Amos (inserted pictures above). Also all you DC residents and people who may visit the Washington DC you gotta check out two cool things! 1. You have got to go to the Scurlock Exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum of American art. 2. You all have go to Quilts of Obama, the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. and the Women of Color Quilters Network have partnered with The Group for Cultural Documentation (TGCD) to present Quilts for Obama: An Exhibit Celebrating the Inauguration of our 44th President, opening Sunday, January 11, 2009, and continuing through January 31, 2009.

There are also so many more things to be looking out for in the art department but I will keep you all posted! Have a good one!

In other news....I wanted to add some work from one of my new favorite artist! I went to a panel discussion at school (Howard University) on the modern art world...It was very interesting and as a budding Art Historian it was enlightening to see the different avenues that art is going and what that means for the industry. That made me want to highlight more works and give my favorite artists a little more exposure.

Are any of you all art patrons and I mean real art patrons...not just a little Wak piece here and there but do you really support the arts. With that I mean do you outfit you house with expresssive pieces that speak to you. Do you get them from a dealer or a local gallery or flee market, from artists or just pick them up in your neighborhood? This goes out especially with regards to African American art. Our aesthetic is slowly dwindling due to the attittudes we as a people have toward expressing our cultural selves too overtly. Are there any artist reading if so I would love to hear what yall have to say about it...How do you feel about the art world and what, if any, ideas do you think need to be done to see a shift in black attitudes toward art?

Hey y'all Im back with some moving pictures of my hair's progress. It feels like its been a long time coming! however I'm only in my third month! I can't wait for the year threshold to be upon me....I'm going to be crazy excited but I also have a feeling my hair will be fully locked then.... I've got really nappy hair and my hair now in three months is doing what alot of peoples does in later stages. I attribute that to the fact my hair is super easy to coil up and knot (literally) on its own, but also I'm taking a swimming class...its goes toward graduation here at Howard.I think all the water interaction is helping my hair lock...as for e i always use a lot of oil to couteract against the dryness the pool can cause but

I'm back ladies!!! And if there's gentleman you too!!! I'm trying to get my "Brunsli" on A.K.A I'm trying to be an avid Blogger! There's so many thing I want to journal, especially with my locks begin. Which reminds me I must include some pictures of me. Oh wait, I mean get a camera! Lol I use the computers at school like I don't have one right here. MAC's are magical though. Mind you I'm three months in the game so these should be pretty extensive. There's been so much progress within my hair! I never cease to be amazed at what my nappy hair can do! So many, too many cultures seem to be sub-consciously addicted to the euro-centric standard! But I've always adored every elements of my own culture. I remember being a little girl living in Bellevue, WA a suburb of Seattle and seeing this beautiful young black woman she had the best Afro I'd ever seen, which in general was kind of a rarity outside of my house and church. I remember randomly walking up to her and asking her how she got her hair that way...she giggled and said she washed it and told me my hair could do it too. I was so enamored from that day on! I love our hair and I wish we all did too. Anywho here's the pictures...Wow, that's a tangent!

They're at their cute runty stage! I kinda liked this; I reaaaallllly missed my Afro volume though! Here I am visiting home...LA, at my sister's house; probably a week and a half after I did my hair initially. Excuse the boobage my sister is like 3sizes small then me but I'm in her "magical Lycra dress" ...as she calls it.

Here's pix from the inauguration. The best part of going to Howard University on the dawning of the first BLACK PRESIDENT is that you get the opportunity to experience alot of the hoopla first hand...and first hand we did. These are some more sorry depictions of the awesomeness that was the Inaugural Concert. Me and my girl Nikki had a blast. ( She's my other natural in our house, I keep trying to convince her to get her lock on....she's apprehensive, rightfully so!) This is us and the people, the people, the people. plus a little Washington Mt. the city was electric that weekend. we my sister and my boyfriend had a blast eating out. It was so crowded people sat with new random people at tables just to eat. needless to say only Barack could do that. i also met Blair Underwood in a random occurrence. all this culminated up to the Inauguration of our 44Th president Barack Obama. I'm just truly blessed to be able to experience it. I also attended the inaugural celebration...that experience is another blog entire in itself. I'll give you all the good, the bad, and the certainly ugly of that event. LOL

All you transitioners and those thinking about it...read this post!

I just wrote a post and concluded with a rhetorical question about the cost you save with your braidlocks, sisterlocks, traditional locks and what have you . Me personally, I realized it was so ironic to me that I had gone 100% natural to cut an expense yet I ended up supplementing one set of expenses (perm) for another(press) and another (natural)(I became a product junkie). Luckily I've been on the straight and narrow for my braidlocs!

Interestingly, when I was about 13, my local church pastor...this is back when I lived in the Seattle area...said, "If black women bypassed hair and nails and saved the money for their children when they turn 18, they'd pay off massive bills, or get them a car, or pay for college!" Very true, though after church I told him that if his wife didn't put in the money and effort to stay her coiffed self, that day they first met he could have walked right by her!

This fiscal situation especially hits home not during this time of recession I think we as a people (especially black woman as they continually target us as the highest consumer bracket within hair care)need to assess what we spend our money on. As the highest rates of unemployment are inching higher toward black people.This is also interesting to see, if at all, are we saving any money on our hair. Hence. I started thinking to my self(scarrrry, lol) and really came up with the semblance of an answer to that question (so much for rhetorical, i guess).

OK, so I had to make a new one of these because my old one (chloebeehair.blogspot.com) was is acting up! So for all of you readers...if I had any, this is now the place to find me! As if you were looking! LOL... Anywho I'm officially A three month old in the BRAIDLOCk world!!! Yay me! It's been along time coming, or at least that's how it felt, but now I'm coming up on big strides. For all of you that are unaware, I'm a braidlock DIY-er and I'm proud to say that all the work done with my hair is all done by me! Thanks in great part to YouTube and all that videos you lovely ladies have made, thus making it possible for me to learn and maintain my own hair. I must say this is a first, so it can be difficult; yet I can also attest that it is sooooo liberating to be able to know that all the work done on your head is directly correlated to you. For me its a large task but getting it done every 6 weeks make it a little easier to conceptualize. Any ladies thinking of making the plunge on your own... I say do it and if your familiar with your hair (which a lot of us naturals are) do it! it's the smartest investment you can make. especially now!

Hey braidlockers

Water fights and asparagus...its starting to feel like childhood. YESSSSSS!

Directions

Preheat oven to 425°F.

Cut off the woody bottom part of the asparagus spears and discard.

With a vegetable peeler, peel off the skin on the bottom 2-3 inches of the spears (this keeps the asparagus from being all "stringy" and if you eat asparagus you know what I mean by that).

Place asparagus on foil-lined baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil.

Sprinkle with salt.

With your hands, roll the asparagus around until they are evenly coated with oil and salt.

Roast for 10-15 minutes, depending on the thickness of your stalks and how tender you like them.

They should be tender when pierced with the tip of a knife.

The tips of the spears will get very brown but watch them to prevent burning.

They are great plain, but sometimes I serve them with a light vinaigrette if we need something acidic to balance out our meal.
