Hey Hey Ladies and Gents!!!
Can I just first start off my saying thank you Lord for Trey Songs parents! (Huh??? You say!) Well for those of you who have not heard Trey Songz Ready CD, you are seriously missing a vocal treat. The new millennium has really been devoid of a lot of powerful male R & B vocals. Now, some of the songs are a little inappropriate but the boy's voice is so spine tingling good at I look past my usual stipulations!!!! I definitely recommend checking it out on Youtube... My mom is even a Trey fan...She thinks he take her back to her day and R Kelly pre-scandal(s)...

Now for the Art....

So I've had a bit of an hiatus...mainly due to getting back into the full swing of the school year has taking a slight toll. So is not having a lap (but that's another subject ennn-tirely.) But, I'm back and wanted to feature 3 artist I'm currently loving!

This is a throwback but Margaret Burroughs. I've always had a love for woodcuts and scratch board, the striking contrast is so beautiful and poignantly illustrates pieces, especially hers which speak Black female perspective which at times deals heavily with contrast. I love her work. Makes me wanna do some scratch board work...

This next artist I adore! Michelle Constantine"s works are so interesting...This piece I will feature has to be one of my favorites. Last semester I did one of my favorite papers of my collegiate career on Voodoo, Santeria and Obeah culture and the art of the practices. Very interesting quilts and such interesting perplexing concepts. I think she has such and interesting aesthetic.. of course Check her out!!!

Artists I'm currently loving! oh and August 30th the greatest day of the year...My birthday!

I wanted to highlight some amazing artist that I've scoped out in the past few months. Its been much too long since I did a blog post on artists I'm feeling and that's just a shame. I love art and love feeling like I can help make a different within he field. As for me, I like to call myself and art historical type,. Though I've painted, sketched, sculpted, designed and a number of other mediums. In my heart of hearts, I know non of those fields I'll ever really excel in other then in the realm of personal satisfaction and fun. But, who cares... For me I know creating and designing jewelry is a passion I love and with the capacity I consume it I might as well create it! Lol Newho I truly digress!!!

Now This man is the real deal! It doesn't hurt that we share a birthday, but for real the man is stellar at his craft. I love the way he juxtaposes his detail figure pieces with surrealist feeling backgrounds. He his also a Howard educated artist with a few awards to tout as well. The man's got skills and he is also a locked cat!

I actually don't know too much about this artist but his brand of comic styling are amazing. Being that my current collaborative works are creating a graphic novel I myself have gained a new sense of respect for the art form but also I have gained much more knowledge on what it takes to create such painstakingly detailed works of art. My hat goes off to him and the piece I'm featuring I adore ( well all of the featured works I adore) but one day when I'm a millionaire I'm going to commission this man to do this piece in my daughters wall...No jokes, I love it that much... Check it out

Another artiste I'm feeling is Brianna McCarthy... Her work is so beautiful and makes me think of words like, pretty, whimsical, dainty, melancholy, modern, lady like, and demure. She works a lot within the African American female aesthetic and definitely plus and she has this very characteristic look of her pieces. another signature element is the hair. Her pieces with flows tresses of all textures and type look to stay consistently natural and make it and absolute joy to view her work. Her pieces are wonderful iconography of modern black women and as a black woman who will one day have a Black daughter, works like this are the type of thing I want to have her look at and feel confident about herself. The works are simply stunning and did I mention she too is a natural!

Now, iF your looking for definitive renaissance women... Well look no more cause Jasika defines just that. Begin and accomplished actress by day and artist by night. Lol, I was first introduced to her work by a friend how know I would love her work and said her work "reminds her of me cause they "look like me(?)"" That might be too far but I love her work. I thin it's hip and fun, cute and intricate. She really has a knack for young naturals and a lot of her works are just that. I wish the sketches were in color darn it... But we can't get it all and there beautiful as is anyway!

I love her! I wish she was around while I was growing up! GEESH! Luckily, I came from a household where my dad was quick to throwaway the white dolls I got from my predominantly White peers as presents. I know, its extreme but he'd buy a new one in its place. I had maybe at best one white doll and I seldom played with it. We eventually tried to make it into a white Ken doll for our friend. Unsuccessfully, of course. We need a petition for Black parents and peers alike to buy Black dolls for our children. Regardless how foolish it seems, it affects our psyche.

Hey all!!!

I know I'm checking back in and it's been a long time....So much for my Brunsli move, ay! But I've been dealing with dreaded finals so I have some type of excuse. I'm sitting here while my booski is playing one of those video games...you know, one of those killing types. Its got all the most, savory concepts. Vulgar language, guns and blood spewing at every turn and giant worms. Oh goody... Times like this really make me realize just how much I despise these types of activity's.Why is killing via digital graphics a form of entertainment....But I digress...

How is everyone.

I'm well and my hair...The true reason for the blog, is doing very well. I'm really starting to love my hair. I've got shrinkage, a little bunching, a few awkward sized locks and all but I still can help but love them. I'm definitely OVER due for a re-tightening...But that's another story entirely. Due to all my other obligations I've really neglected a through haircare day! That will be soon trust and believe cause I've got to have about an inch of new growth! Love's it!!! Even though my hair is like honey I shrunk my massive fro'. Lol Conversely, a lot of people have commented on its growth and thickening...Me on the other hand would like to see a combo of both but whatev. They don't know what I've researched it to be and what it was to start....Wooo I still get shocked. I'm definitely all up in my hurre. I can't help it. It's so frickin cute and has little blondish peach fuzz...Which i used to despise; now with my locks its kinda cute! I'm just growing so much. Like nowadays I'm no longer pressed to make sure my hair is styled and some days i look a little "boyish" with my short fuzzy do', but my boyfriend has been supportive. He even told me the other day as we went out that I looked goregous and wearing my straight clean locks was how he like to see me best. Not all the bells and whistles. I think I still need more convincing but hey, I am a DIVA what can I say.

As for my art obsession I got a chance to go to this thing...Only the quintessential Black art community event THE Porter Colloquium! It's an event held by Howard Every year, speaks on the art progressions and challenges, debuts new and old greats of the field and highlights the accomplishments of an artist in the field. This year Ms. Emma Amos (inserted pictures above). Also all you DC residents and people who may visit the Washington DC you gotta check out two cool things! 1. You have got to go to the Scurlock Exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum of American art. 2. You all have go to Quilts of Obama, the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. and the Women of Color Quilters Network have partnered with The Group for Cultural Documentation (TGCD) to present Quilts for Obama: An Exhibit Celebrating the Inauguration of our 44th President, opening Sunday, January 11, 2009, and continuing through January 31, 2009.

There are also so many more things to be looking out for in the art department but I will keep you all posted! Have a good one!
